desktop client 6.0.0 and 6.0.0-rc1 not starting on Ubuntu 20.04

Describe the bug

The desktop client complains about not finding GLIBCXX_3.4.29 and GLIBCXX_3.4.30

I think that these are newer GLIBC versions than are usually available on Ubuntu 20.04 (which is getting a bit old now).

Is Ubuntu 20.04 still supposed to be supported?

I have tried to install later GCC on my Ubuntu 20.04, but with no joy yet. Are we required to install some later/newer things to get the desktop client working in Ubuntu 20.04?

I decided that this is the time to reinstall my whole system with Ubuntu 24.04
Desktop client 6 is working on Ubuntu 24.04, so that avoids the problem for me!

But maybe there are others with this problem on Ubuntu 20.04.
Maybe Desktop client 6 should not be released/supported for Ubuntu 20.04, and leave 20.04 systems running Desktop client 5.x?

Good question! I'm not sure actually, that laptop was installed a few years ago, when Ubuntu 20.04 was current (and I think it even started life with 18.04). And the desktop client has worked in the background and updated itself etc over the years.

I have completely overwritten/reinstalled the laptop with Ubuntu 24.04 at the weekend, so I now have no way to look at what was.

Do we test on an Ubuntu 20.04 VM? Or maybe nearly everyone who has an Ubuntu desktop/laptop has upgraded past 20.04 by now.

20.04 is EOL since March 2025 - so we can kind of ignore this...

There are still client packages for 20.04 available - I assume these still work. For appimage I would not expect that 20.04 is supported.

I see the same errors on Ubuntu 20.04 with the package installed as described here:
https://download.owncloud.com/desktop/ownCloud/stable/latest/linux/download

If Ubuntu 20.04 is no longer supported, I would expect no instruction for it on the download page and no packages in the repository.

Hi, same issue for the Debian 11 (which is still LTS for now) client...
If it's not supported anymore I would also expect instructions to be removed from the download page.
